We’re excited to bring you the debut installment of our new Teen Influencers series! This first post is brought to you by Rebecca Wong, a high school student who loves to blog about clothes, travel, baking, and more. Read on for some of Rebecca’s youthful wisdom on living the life you’ve always wanted by creating it for yourself.
All around Pinterest, Tumblr, and other social media platforms, I’ve been seeing this quote from time to time, and it has stayed prominent in my mind:
She decided to start living the life she’d imagined.
I’m a bit of a daydreamer; I like to think about all of the things that I want out of life and what it would be like to “have it all.” However, for the longest time, I didn’t do anything about it. I sat there, dreaming about all the things I wanted to do, but never took action on them.
The thought of a blog was one of those dreams that I thought impossible. I imagined what it would be like to be a blogger, but one thing that constantly held me back was my age. I felt like I was too young to have a blog, and I told myself that I would make one later, when I was older.
Eventually, I realized that there was no point in waiting. Yes, I may have had my whole life ahead of me, but what’s life without following your dreams? The only thing that was holding me back was myself. When I started my blog, I decided to start living the life that I had imagined.
Along with starting my blog, I learned that one of the best things about being a blogger is being able to create. Although bloggers create all kinds of photos, content, ideas, and more, there’s one big thing that is often overlooked.
What bloggers do is create the life that we’ve imagined.
We’re able to take a bit of all the things we love and mix them together to produce something that we love even more. Most bloggers are self-made and ambitious. We’re go-getters that are willing to do anything to achieve what we want.
However, it can often be difficult.
Although creating the life that you had imagined isn’t easy, it all branches from somewhere. One of those places is community. Whether you realize it or not, the people around you impact you greatly. They shape who you are. Us bloggers, no matter what age, can use our influence to create a community that we love, as well as influence others.
Consider what you enjoy.
When people ask me what my hobbies are, I often draw a blank. I’ll answer with something generic, like reading, despite the fact that I haven’t read a book in ages.
Ask yourself what your hobbies are and be honest about it, whether it means that your answer is lying in bed watching Netflix or going to cute coffee shops with fancy latte art. You’d be surprised to find out that so many other people like the same things as you.
I once participated in a Twitter chat with other bloggers, and we ended up finding a common interest in stationery of all things! This kind of thing leads to new friendships and conversations. Figure out what you enjoy doing, even if it’s something a bit nerdy, like computer programming or reading comics. Once you do that, look for people who are interested in it as well. These are the people that will make up your community. A community needs something to hold it together, and common interests are the key to building up that bond.
Take advantage of all types of online communities.
Living in the modern day and age, there are all kinds of ways to be sociable online. However, you have to be willing to try out different types of online communities. By taking part in all kinds of social platforms, you’re opening yourself up to the potential for new communities.
Let’s say that you’re already on one platform, like Twitter, but not any of the others. The people that are not Twitter might be busy using Pinterest and Tumblr, so you never meet. By expanding your network and signing up for these other platforms, you can meet more people that share your interests and also grow your community.
Keep an open mind, clear of expectation.
One of my worst habits is having unreachable expectations. It’s more than just dreaming big; it’s an imaginary world where everything that I want comes true. I may go into a community expecting it to be a certain way, and I’ll be disappointed if I find out that it isn’t. That mindset only holds me back. Endless possibilities are limited when you have over-the-top expectations.
In order to create something, you have to have a goal, but also be reasonable with it. By keeping an open mind, you’re leaving the door open for new opportunities.
I am a teen blogger, and I have a voice. You can generate buzz by simply speaking out about things. It doesn’t matter if you have 100 followers or 10,000. All you have to do is speak out and let your voice be heard.
Yes, as someone who is relatively young, I often find myself discouraged to voice my opinion, because I feel like it doesn’t matter. I feel small in a big world. The world is filled with people that will make you feel powerless and unimportant because you’re young, but that shouldn’t matter.
You can generate buzz within your community and outside of it. Don’t be afraid to start up a conversation. Conversation is one of the best ways to strengthen a community and attract new people to it. Speak out, and let your voice be heard!
Creating a community that you love is something that can be done by simply channeling your true self, as cheesy as it sounds. You shouldn’t hide who you are, and you should embrace the things that you love, because that will help you create something that you love. If you don’t keep in mind the things that you love, then you might end up with a community you’re not happy with.
Creating a community will create bonds and friendships, but only if you are purely yourself. If you don’t embrace yourself, then what makes you think that others will?
Yes, I am a teen blogger and have chosen to follow my dreams. I’m not reckless or clueless; I’m ambitious. I am not afraid to go after what I want. I know who I am and where I’m going. I am creating the life that I have imagined.
