Ever considered traveling over 13,000 miles with your family? My family is a little wild, so I wouldn’t, but wilderness guide, writer and award-winning photographer Bruce Kirkby actually did it. He and his wife, Christine Pitkanen, took their two boys–Bodi, 7 and Taj, 3–on a life-changing 13,000-mile adventure!
Fun, right? Well, there’s a catch… they went on this journey without taking ANY airplanes. Seriously, can you imagine?
One Big Crazy Family Adventure
If you don’t believe it… it was all on tape! In July, Bruce and Christine’s Big Crazy Family Adventure aired on the Travel Channel. I watched in awe as this family traveled for 96 days with 2 kids using 15 various modes of transportation to get across 12 times zones and never got on a single airplane. Not one!
Check out an excerpt from the show below, where Bruce keeps his boys entertained on their 14 day cargo ship trip with a scavenger hunt:
Talk about getting creative!
Some of our Blogger Babes watched along and shared their thoughts on the #BCFA and their own family travel adventures.
Katie of La Jolla Mom had this to say:
You see, it’s incredibly important to me to give my daughter extraordinary life experiences, even though she’s young. She cycles through toys quickly and forgets about them. But, she does remember being at the Great Wall and climbing the smaller platforms and walls at Teotihuacan. It is incredibly cool to see her study a subject at school and have her say, “I’ve been there!”
Deanna of mommyGAGA said:
I am determined to make sure that my kids see the world, in all it’s glory, and in all of its differences and sorrows. Travel is a great way to teach patience, appreciation, understanding and compassion for humans and for our environment, worldwide. However, you WILL see us on an airplane!
I’m totally with you there, Deanna. If we ever travel that far, I’ll definitely be purchasing plane tickets!
Shannan, a Resourceful Mommy contributor took time to think about her family trips and said:
I’m beginning to think that maybe we’re not getting as much as we could out of our vacations because of all of my planning. Sounds strange? I know, but stick with me here.
You have to go read on and see the breakthrough she had about her family adventures!
