You can create the best content the World has ever seen :), still it will mean nothing if no one reads it. It is absolutely necessary to constantly promote your blog and the posts that you write so more people would be able to read and share them forward if they like or see value in the content.
You can find more on Marketing Your Blog in our dedicated category, and here I want to share an infographic from DivvyHQ that I saw recently (though it’s not that new), which covers “12 Things You Need to Do After Writing a New Blog Post”. The checklist can certainly be updated with few “new” activities, but think it would be better to leave this discussion to you. 🙂 Share your comments below…
So here are the 12 things to do right after you’ve finished a blog post:
#1 Keyword optimize your post.
Ideally you would know the main topics of your blog post even before you started writing it. However, you need those keywords to scan them through AdWords free keyword research tool to find the most popular ones in phrasing and wording. Optimize your post and title for those terms to make sure Google and other search engines can find and read it.
Make sure to read:
#2 Syndicate your content.
#3 Shorten your post’s URL.
Short links not only give you more space on Twitter to give insight into your post, but now that most URL shortening services provide analytics too, you can also closely follow the success of those links and see what works best with your audience.
#4 Tailor your status updates.
Yes, you can copy the title of the post into the box when sharing it on your blog’s social pages, but the chances are it won’t generate the interest that you target. Every audience is different, and you need to tailor your social updates so the message you try to send is appropriate to their specifics.
#5 Post teasers on other sites.
You can promote your content on most blogs and online forums as long as it’s relevant to the subject they cover. One way to do it is to write a compelling headline or question as a forum title, then include some thoughtful commentary followed by your shortened URL, and lastly, ask for readers to provide feedback to continue the discussion.
#6 Bookmark your content.
Belonging to a community is a great deal in blogging. The support of fellow bloggers and readers interested in your topic can really boost your blog’s success. Guest blogging is one of the ways to build a community; posting content to popular social bookmarking websites (like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit) is another to reach out and connect to these people.
#7 Comment on other blogs.
#8 Seek and assist on Twitter.
Search Twitter for relevant discussions to join and engage in Google+ communities related to your blog niche to provide advice for people asking for guidance, following with a short URL to your post. Still, the post cannot be your main focus, but establishing yourself in the conversation.
#9 Add to email signature.
You can also add the title of your latest post to your email signature to promote it in front of people with whom you regularly communicate. There are tools that can do this automatically, like Wisestamp for Gmail.
#10 Share your blog post with target customer.
If you know certain readers and customers would LOVE to know about your new post, send them an email with a shortened link to it.
#11 Add your blog post to your next newsletter.
If you are still new to email marketing check our post on how to get started. In case you are already sending your subscribers regular email newsletters, make sure to include the best content from your blog. Test different post headlines and teasers and check your analytics to see what gets the most clicks.
#12 Ask other bloggers to mention your post.
You can reach out to your network and ask them to share certain “extra special” post for you as a favor, but you can’t do this very often, and please don’t forget to mention that you are ready to do the same in return when they need it. It’s best to prepare everything for them, the link and a pre-written social post, so they won’t have to put much thought and effort into it.
