So, do you have credibility or authority as a blogger?
Before you answer, it’s helpful to understand what credibility is and isn’t. “Credibility” varies by field. If you’re a scientist, having a bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean much unless you’ve gone all the way through your master’s or doctorate. Your scientific research must be original, you can’t recycle work, and your citations must be in the proper format. Your credibility is based primarily on education, experience, and expertise.
But it’s not the same if you’re running a fashion blog. Your readers won’t care about your secondary education; they care about your knowledge of fashion, designers, and styles. They’ll base your credibility on your personal style and personality—how well you’re able to connect with them.
For a blogger, having credibility means being believable and knowing how to deliver your message. It means being able to communicate and connect with your audience. It means that your readers have no doubt that you are the best person to turn to in your niche.
Experts say that it takes a long time to build credibility, which is true to a point. But consider the experts you’re consulting in the first place. Did they gain your interest and trust immediately? Did you find yourself wishing that you could be coached by them, or hoping to be exactly like them? If yes, write down some notes about why you became interested in this professional, and you’ll discover your own path to credibility.
Some things to consider:
- How did this person catch your attention?
- What did you feel? Be as detailed as possible. Don’t be embarrassed. These notes are for your own personal reference.
- What is that person offering? How and why did it resonate with you?
- What did you buy? Why did you buy it? Did it promise something?
- How did it deliver? Was it the promised solution?
- What most stood out in your mind with this expert connection?
Your answer to this set of questions determines what you need. If what stands out in your mind about an expert scientist is their degree, you’ll aim for those credentials to reach that same level of expertise, right?
