You too, probably have this question on your mind if you are thinking, or already are doing some blogging. The correct answer for large part of bloggers would be the sooner, the better.
The reality is that if you really want to blog and make money, you need to see blogging as a real business. This definitely includes having a clear strategy for how this “business” will make profit, and whether that would fit the initial concept you have about your blog. You want to keep blogging fun, so never go against what you truly want to do.
Possibly the best time to start thinking about monetizing your blog is before you even launch it. The more thought your put into it, the better solutions you’ll come up with – for you and for your blog readers.
Set expectations from day one.
It takes time and hard work to start making money from blogging, but even though you might not expect to earn big dollars in the first couple of months, it’s better to make it clear to your readers from the very begging that your blog is not just a hobby. If they get used to having everything for free you’ll be having hard times selling them later.
Also, when you integrate monetization into your blogging, you may decide to redefine some blog elements:
- Add a separate landing page optimized to collect your visitors’ information.
- Select a blog theme that allows more space for ads.
- Write more review posts with included affiliate links.
- Include a section in the sidebar for the ebook you work on.
- List and describe your products, or add a “Hire me” page to promote your services.
… and so on.
In most cases, bloggers are aware and accepting of the fact that their blogs won’t immediately generate money, that they need to first get them online, write content and create something of real value to readers. While this is true, no one says you should wait for your blog to go for months (or even years) before you start considering monetization. The earlier you have this set, the better you can integrate the promotion element in your blog concept.
Not yet launched your blog? At this point your hands are completely open to do anything you decide is best for you, your blog and your readers. But make sure to think it well through – How is it that you want your blog to generate revenues? Most bloggers start with advertising and affiliate programs as they are easier and more available, but if you do your research, depending on your niche, you may discover you will make money a lot faster if you offer a service or product.
Is your blog still fresh and new? While still at the beginning you have a chance to prepare your readers for the monetization that is going to happen in the (near or far) future. Say you are preparing an ebook – you can write a post, or throw an occasional mention on social sites to raise initial interest.
Or are you a well-established blogger? Then what’s stopping you from monetizing your blog? Are you afraid how your readers will react? There will be some negative comments, but most people are understanding and will accept or even encourage your efforts, particularly if your blog monetization works great for both, you and your following.
